Renting a Vehicle.

In comparison to other European countries Italy is an expensive place to rent a car; this is largely due to high insurance premiums.

Most well known rental companies such as Hertz have offices in the majority of international airports as do smaller local companies. You should always pre-book a car to avoid disappointment.

Important Points to Consider:

- Always check what type of fuel the car takes. The majority of family sized rental cars use Diesel.

- Always check the car is supplied with a certificate of insurance and ownership.

- Rental representatives rarely check the vehicle, the usual procedure is you are given the keys and told where the vehicle is parked. Always inspect the vehicle yourself, if you find any damage that is not noted on the rental agreement always go back to the rental office and inform them. You should also check the operation of the lights.

- Rental vehicles in Italy are only covered by third-party insurance. You will be offered an upgrade to fully comprehensive insurance, it may seem expensive but it is worth the extra money.

- You can usually rent minibuses from most airports however, remember on a standard UK driving license you can only drive a vehicle with a maximum of 8 seats. The rental company are unlikely to check this but if you are stopped by the police they will, so always double check you are driving within the law.

Renting a Scooter

A scooter is a great way of exploring a city such as Florence. Scooters can be rented by the hour, half day or daily. Anybody with a standard car driving license can rent a scooter upto 125cc. In Italy you can only carry a pillion passenger on scooters over 50cc.

Scooters only have third party insurance, therefore if you are involved in an accident or bike is stolen you will be liable for the full cost of repair or replacement. All rental companies offer an insurance upgrade to fully comprehensive - your advised to take it!
